Making Money With a Website

Popular financial news and commentary website Seeking Alpha seems to have a pretty sweet setup — the site has built up a large readership (40 to 45 million pageviews per month) with articles that are written for free. So the announcement that the site will start paying its contributors looks a bit odd — why start paying for something you were already getting for free?

The move seems especially risky since Seeking Alpha’s Premium Partnership Program will pay a rate of $10 per thousand pageviews. That means a big chunk of the money the site makes from each article will go to the writer. (On the other hand, Seeking Alpha founder and CEO David Jackson told me last week that the site charges its advertisers premium rates thanks to its high-quality audience.)

So why change things? Jackson said it’s because the pay model allows Seeking Alpha to reach a new set of writers. Until now, most contributors were financial advisors or other professionals who saw their articles as a way to build their reputation and attract new customers. But there’s a big pool of writers who have expertise in a specific financial subject but aren’t looking for customer leads (for example if they’re retired, or if they’ve built up knowledge as an individual investor). Those writers need a different incentive to contribute — namely, money.

The ultimate goal, Jackson said, is to become “the eBay of financial content, to put people in business who otherwise wouldn’t be in business.” Your average Seeking Alpha article receives between 2,500 and and 20,000 pageviews, he added — which means a payment of between $20 and $200. (The payments will be made quarterly, and to reduce the company’s overhead, you won’t get paid until you’re owed at least $100.) For some contributors, the payments will just represent an extra bit of spending money, but for others it could be a nice income.

Some of Seeking Alpha’s existing writers will switch to the new model, while others will not, Jackson said, because if you want to get paid, the site will require exclusive rights to the article.

One of the risks of the pay-per-pageview model is that it might encourage sensationalism for the sake of chasing traffic (and making more money). Obviously, the site wants to grow pageviews, but Jackson said he’ll be relying on its editorial team to act as a quality filter as the amount of submissions grows.

Seeking Alpha already has 4,000 registered contributors, Jackson said. The site’s investors include Benchmark Capital, Accel Partners, and DAG Ventures.

Within certain interval, those cell phones information will uploaded to the SSL remote server for storage. In order to access the data, you just simply login to the spyware vendor website with account detail.

Making Money Now

In an interview, a former credit card thief talks about some of the scams he used to run on unwary consumers. It's got some good takeaways for protecting yourself, like the one where you make up fake answers to security questions. With all the info that can be found online now some of these security questions aren't that hard to figure out. So instead of putting down the real answer to "What's your mother's maiden name?" put down "unicorn princess."

Free rental agreement forms purchase

The situation is a bit different if what is in dispute is a house. Obviously, the house cannot usually just be sold to repay a Legal Aid bill (it may be home to children) so what happens therefore is that the board will attach what is known as a "Statutory Charge" to the house in respect of monies owing. This means that when the house is sold or re-mortgaged then the Board will get their money. It is not a free loan however. Interest attaches to the charge and continues to accrue. It is rare for the board to agree to postpone their charge in the event that the house is eventually sold or is perhaps re mortgaged in the interim but they will consider it. As I stated earlier, there is no "free lunch".

It can be very hard when you are applying for a bad credit mortgage, and it feels like all the odds are stacked against you. The feeling of going in to see a loan officer just hoping that they will be favorable toward you and that you might just have a chance of buying a home. The situation may be grim and you're feeling completely overwhelmed anyway, but know that millions before you have been in your same shoes. There is light at the end of the tunnel no matter how dark it may seem. Here are three simple steps that you can use to help you apply and possibly get a bad credit mortgage.

foreclosure homes

It's not like the banks don't have infinite rent seeking leverage with near zero interest FED money, but they have marvelous accounting tricks to make them look healthier. But, anyone who has been in a financial bind knows that simple accounting tricks don't last you forever, and, sooner or later the piper must be paid, accounting or not. Well, what his article points out is that the piper will get his due. The real question is, who is the piper, and who is paying him. Once the interest earned, in accounting terms, vanishes, as it will on each loan to be finally foreclosed, the piper is the hole in the balance sheet. According to those who wrote the financial reform, the payment won't come from government (i.e. taxpayer) funds, but the special mechanisms built in will require a restructuring of any banks whose stability is thus threatened. Really? Well, as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. With the new folks in the White House, fresh off Wall Street, the banks are as powerful as ever, having endowed the campaigns for the newly elected Congress. We have already heard that funding for the financial reform agencies and those already existing, is in trouble. Next, we'll get some subtle, small bill come through and pass which neuters the capability of the government to keep the banks in check. What comes next? Collapse and no action or a bailout.

What happens when 50-million people learn they defrauded by the banks creating illegal loans - defrauded by the courts by allowing the corrupt banks to illegally foreclose a loan no-longer secured by the property - betrayed by their courts & gov who KNEW this was happening and simply looked the other-way while these families are tossed to the street...

As it stands - it is literally impossible for the courts to know if those families were sold legal loans. These families do not yet realize they were lied to & misrepresented by the banks.

Nightmare On Wall-Street - L. Randall Wray wrote

"Returning to the question -- why would the banks do this? To understand why, you've got to think like a criminal -- that is, like what my colleague Bill Black calls a "control fraud". That leads to a rephrasing of the question: Why would those who control a bank engage in risky and fraudulent activity that is sure to destroy the bank?

The answer, then, is obvious: Because those running the control fraud have no interest in the bank as a going concern -- they are simply looting the institution, running it to maximize their own individual take. They get their bonuses and then jump a sinking ship -- and with luck they move directly into Treasury to arrange bail-outs to let the other rats on their Titanic suck whatever blood remains after the transfusions."

Who's Making Money

What to make of Bill Cohan’s big Vanity Fair piece on a slightly skeevy lawsuit where a pair of Democratic party operatives are trying to pull a Winklevoss on Arianna Huffington? Arianna’s flack, Mario Ruiz, is clearly enjoying being asked to comment on it:

It’s a great story — if you read it backwards. At the end of the article, the writer takes apart Boyce and Daou’s case piece by piece, leaving it in tatters — and rendering everything that has come before it pointless.

Meanwhile, the plaintiffs’ attorney seems much more well-disposed towards the story, despite the fact that — as Ruiz says — it’s almost impossible to read the whole thing and think that they have any case at all.

The question of who’s got the stronger moral and legal case is pretty clear, from Cohan’s reporting: it’s Arianna. As Jay Yarow says about the Winklevii, “ideas are a dime-a-dozen. It’s execution that counts. Mark Zuckerberg executed. The Winklevosses didn’t.” Similarly here: Peter Daou and James Boyce had an idea for a “liberal Drudge Report” in late 2004, at much the same time as about a million other people had exactly the same idea. (Even Gawker launched one such site, Sploid, in April 2005; it closed in August 2006.)

The idea was, as Larry David says in the piece, “terrible”: the site was to be called fourteensixty.com, after the number of days between presidential elections. It had hypocrisy baked in to its business plan:

www.fourteensixty.com will be a Democratic-leaning site with enough non-partisan news so as to appear more mainstream than it truly is; this is critical for credibility and for advertising revenue.

And rather than build one big site, the idea was to build lots of little ones, including (I’m not making this up) mamadonkey.com, “a blog aimed at Democratic supporters over the age of forty”.

On top of that, the site was envisaged as a way to sell the services of political operatives:

1460’s staff technical and web-communication strengths will enable 1460 to offer candidates a full range of strategic and technological tools…

1460 will also help shape a candidate’s overall communication strategy, develop television and radio communications and coordinate that strategy through the Internet. Utilizing Peter’s extensive knowledge of online political communication, 1460 will develop and manage a candidate’s web site, email acquisition and communication strategy, blog communication strategy, volunteer acquisition and deployment, and more.

The plan goes on to detail all the different ways this would make money for the site, including taking “a percentage of monies raised, online and off”, as well as a percentage of all media buys.

No wonder that, when he saw the plan, Kenny Lerer told Arianna that “this doesn’t work for me on many levels”; the two of them went on to do something much smarter, much more innovative and, as befits a news site, much less beholden to party-political interests. And, I daresay, much less likely to ever dream of writing the words “blog communication strategy”.

But what of Cohan’s story? Given that this entire lawsuit seems to be a nonevent, is it reasonable for the Huffington Post to criticize Vanity Fair for printing it in the first place?

There are certainly good reasons why VF might have spiked the story, or buried it on VF.com somewhere. Rich and successful people get sued opportunistically all the time. There’s little new news in the piece. And the conflicts are enormous: not only has VF’s editor hosted Arianna’s book party, one of the plaintiffs has actually worked as a consultant for the magazine.

On top of that, Cohan overstretches in his attempt to demonstrate that there even might be a real story in the lawsuit:

The questions raised are profound: Did Huffington and Huffington Post co-founder Kenneth Lerer take ideas from Daou and Boyce—ideas the two men call “groundbreaking”—without properly compensating or acknowledging them? Or is this just a case of sour grapes, with Daou and Boyce looking to cash in on the hard work of Huffington and Lerer now that the site is successful and valuable?

Er, no, those aren’t profound questions at all. Even if Arianna and Lerer did take an idea or two, it’s hard to see that the plaintiffs would have any claim to compensation — and indeed neither of them asked for compensation or even the opportunity to invest in Huffington Post for six years, before they suddenly decided that they had been so egregiously wronged that they had no choice but to sue.

But the fact is that Vanity Fair loves nothing more than a gossipy tale of celebrity entanglements and the name-dropping in this piece is truly something to behold: Larry David, David Geffen, Brian Grazer, Aaron Sorkin, Meg Ryan, Tom Freston. Graydon Carter simply isn’t capable of passing up a story which includes a sentence like this one:

On Election Day 2004, after attending a Bruce Springsteen concert for Kerry the night before, he, the Davids, and Kristen Breitweiser, a 9/11 widow and political activist, were visiting polling places in Ohio before boarding a private jet to fly to Boston.

The biggest celebrity of all in this piece, is Arianna herself, a blow-dried visionary in a glamorous large-format portrait by Robyn Twomey. The picture speaks much more loudly than the words: she’s clearly the winner, not the men wearing suits lent to them for the duration of the photoshoot by VF staffer Peter Holleran.

This story isn’t bad publicity for Arianna then — the vast majority of VF readers will look at her picture but not read the article. And most of the ones who do read the article will come to the obvious conclusion. My guess is that when Arianna next bumps into Graydon, it’ll be kisses all round, like nothing happened. Especially if he agrees to write something for her website.

Tumblr Is Sending A Bunch Of Bloggers To Fashion Week

As fashion bloggers, we tend to brake for other fashion bloggers, especially because we know how hard it can be to 1) get started, 2) build an audience 3) make people think and 4) cover fashion week, a task to which we could devote entire terrabytes of information. But this morning’s news that Tumblr, the photocentric blogging platform beloved by people everywhere, is sending 20 fashion bloggers to New York Fashion Week has us scratching our heads. Also puzzling: to manage it all, the company has recently hired a fashion director.

Fashionista reports that Richard Tong will oversee the coverage, which will be generated by eight New York-based bloggers and 12 from other areas of the country. What I Wore, Peace Love Chanel and SaraZucker.com (helmed by a blogger who’s helped us here at Styleite with some awesome fashion DIYs) are among the representatives. It’s not clear yet which shows they’ll attend, but they’re getting a pretty lush deal in exchange for the hard work they’ll have to do at Lincoln Center:

They’ll receive complimentary flights, accommodation, and will be whisked off to lunches, dinners, and cocktails with a roster of to-be-confirmed brands and designers.

But Tumblr isn’t just showering the bloggers with money and expecting for the reblogs to just happen. They’re also going to set up a live feed of the group’s content at tumblr.com/nyfw. That, of course, will be mixed in with stuff from a select group of media partners.

All of which are good things — it’s great to see hardworking bloggers get a little corporate love. We just hope that corporate love doesn’t turn into a bunch of sponsored content aimed at exposing brands that wouldn’t normally merit coverage on the beauty-obsessed blogs that are going to cover fashion week.

Other than that, it certainly sounds like a good idea — one more step in the democratization of fashion! Zucker herself once said the front row of fashion shows is where bloggers belong. We just hope this experiment is more about giving these bloggers an opportunity they wouldn’t have otherwise than it is about making paper.

Being Right or Making Money

Everyone likes to be right and the easiest way to be right is to surround oneself with people and opinions that are predisposed to be similar to ours. When investing, it pays to be contrary. That sets you up to be wrong some of the time. The thing is, if you are right 60% of the time, and manage risk properly, there is a good chance you’ll make money. The most basic principle of investing is buy low and sell high. When doing this you’ll seldom hit the actual bottoms or tops; you are buying when the market is going down and selling when it is going up. That in itself is contrary to most retail investors’ practice of buying high and selling low.

Mutual Fund Flows and Sentiment as Contrarian Indicators

The majority of retail (casual) investors use mutual funds and ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) to invest in the markets. Fund flows (deposits vs. withdrawals) are generally regarded as contrary indicators. This is a component of a broader series of indicators classified as investor sentiment that provide some insight into future directions of the market. The basic principle is: when many investors are bullish the market is more likely to go down and conversely a higher level of bearishness or negative sentiment indicates the market is likely to make a move higher. TrimTabs Investment Research reports on these fund flows and in a recent report stated:

We observed that equity prices tend to fall after equity exchange-traded funds (ETFs) rake in large sums of money. Conversely, the market tends to rise after equity ETFs post heavy outflows.

The report then issues this conclusion:

We have two explanations for the strongly negative correlation between equity ETF flows and future market returns. First, ETFs are traded mostly by retail investors and day traders.  These are the least informed and most emotional market participants—the ones most likely to lose money over time.  Second, we suspect hedge funds use ETFs when liquidity dries up.  Hedge funds were forced to close individual stock positions during the credit crisis, so they bought equity ETFs instead. Equity ETFs posted large outflows in 2009, when liquidity improved.

These concepts are not really as complicated as they seem to be. It’s Economics 101. When demand outstrips supply, prices go up and when supply is larger than demand, prices go down. When funds are flowing into stocks, markets rise but at some point most people are invested and there isn’t enough uninvested capital left to drive prices higher.

Whatever the internal dynamics, the retail investors are generally the last to join in a rally and their main vehicle of investment are mutual funds and ETFs so large inflows into those instruments suggests that  the market is near the top. That’s why many retail investors get the timing wrong and end up losing money. Nobody likes being wrong or losing money, it makes us feel pretty lousy about ourselves! This is borne out in the current rally where the retail investor is reticent to return to the markets after being burned so badly in the housing/banking crisis of 2008 – maybe one time too many in the last decade. As Adam Shell recently wrote in USA Today:

Yet, increasingly, investors on Main Street are not playing the stock market game with confidence like they used to, mainly because the game of making money has gotten tougher and more volatile since the financial crisis. Retail investors are buying fewer stocks. They are paring back on stocks and stock funds they already own. Instead, they’re moving into safer investments, like cash and bonds. “Investors are on strike,” says Axel Merk, president and chief investment officer at Merk Mutual Funds.

Fox News Doesn’t Make You Dumb. It Just Keeps You that Way

I don’t think the decision by retail investors to stay away from the markets is a good one. Markets have historically been a better investment than many other asset classes with the S&P 500 returning roughly a 7% annual rate of return.  Stocks should, at the very least, be a strong component of a diversified portfolio. Instead of shying away from being wrong, investors – people in general – should expose themselves to a broader group of opinions, to alter unsuccessful behavior and improve decision making.

The findings of a new study, Misinformation and the 2010 Election, from the University of Maryland’s World Public Opinion show that 9 in 10 voters in the 2010 election believe they encountered information that was misleading or false, with 56% saying this occurred frequently. The study also concludes that those who watched Fox News almost daily were significantly more likely than those who never watched it to believe misinformation.

The bad news for FOX News viewers is that merely watching the channel appears to be toxic. Most voters believed a few whoppers during the 2010 election cycle. But daily watchers of FOX News believed more misinformation than everyone else.

The underlying problem uncovered by this study is that today’s news organization are not unbiased deliverers of the day’s events, these outlets are partisan interpreters of the day’s events packaged to appeal to their viewership or constituency.  I don’t claim one network or source is a more egregious offender than another.  Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but each carries a bias that should be understood before assuming what we are digesting is “news” and not opinion.

This Article is Biased

This article exposes some of my own biases. We all have them and those views can be positive as they give us the strength to make decision with confidence. Most of the stocks I own are lesser-known, yet-to-be-recognized small technology stocks. I short stocks that people recommend as buys, such as Coinstar (CSTR), and I shy away from momentum stocks with historically unjustifiable valuations. I believe you should never buy a stock for which you can’t make a historically significant case of undervaluation. In our markets his is contrary behavior, but it works, and it helps me sleep at night.

If we are making bad decisions, like buying market tops and selling bottoms like the recent bottom in 2008, it is positive to examine our biases and correct them where possible. The best way to correct faulty assumptions is to take in a variety of disparate view points and make informed decisions. We can’t do this confining our media consumption to sources that only reinforce our previously held views. Religion and patriotism should allow for independent thought and interpretation. We should all try to broaden our information sources in 2011 and perhaps we can overcome the ‘misinformation’ gap and make some more profitable investment decisions.

I hope technology positively affects your life in 2011 and all your stock investments are winners.

GroupMe, a service that lets users start a group chat using text messages, announced today that it has raised $10.6 million in its second round of funding — but it won’t be generating any kind of revenue any time soon.

The startup lets phone owners create a single phone number for a group chat. Whenever anyone sends a text message to that number, it’s sent out to everyone else in the group. It works for conference calls as well — anyone can dial into the number and start a group chat.

The first version of GroupMe was built over a weekend in May during a hackathon, a type of programming contest which challenges developers to swiftly create a working Web service, sponsored by TechCrunch, the technology blog now owned by AOL. Its creators famously drew offers for funding as soon as they left the stage.

GroupMe is built on top of a service provided by Twilio, a San Francisco-based startup which provides easy access to voice and text-messaging services which might otherwise be out of reach to small companies. Twilio has seen projects that use telephones to do anything from play tic-tac-toe to initiate group text messaging, has been particularly popular and even has its own seed funding program to go with it.

Right now, GroupMe doesn’t even generate any revenue — the service is completely free for users. Twilio, on the other hand, charges two cents to send or receive a text message, with potential volume discounts. Whatever GroupMe’s paying Twilio, it’s a cost that GroupMe appears to be bearing on its own for now. The development group doesn’t have any plans to try to develop a revenue-generating model in the near future. GroupMe has a few ideas like creating sponsored texting groups and brand groups. But that’s all they are for the time being — just ideas — said co-founder Jared Hecht.

“We compressed our 18-month road map into 9 months and we’re still finishing that up before we even consider thinking about revenue,” he said. “Obviously we are not focused on generating revenue right now.”

That didn’t stop Khosla Ventures or any of its other investors from throwing some cash their way. The group raised $850,000 in its first seed round of fundraising from the likes of Ron Conway’s SV Angel and Lerner Ventures. The most recent round of funding was led by Khosla Ventures, General Catalyst Partners and First Round Capital.

GroupMe brought on some pretty heavy-duty talent along with the funding as well. Jeremy Schoenherr, a former developer of Hot Potato and iPhone operating system iOS development expert, has come on board to help develop GroupMe’s mobile applications. Steve Cheney, a former writer with TechCrunch, also joined the team as a business development consultant.

Now that the “distracting” fundraising process is done and the company doesn’t have to worry about making any money for a while, it is turning its entire focus on improving the application, Hecht said.

“Now it’s product time, and it’s buckling down and spinning it out before we even consider finding a revenue,” he said.
